Does everyone remember the surf scene from the movie, Apocalypse Now, by Francis Ford Coppola, where several surfers were in the lineup with shells exploding in the water all around them? This movie, although shot in the Philippines, was a movie about the war in Vietnam.
During the war American soldiers DID surf in Vietnam during R and R. And Vung Tau was one of the R and R locations for the American GIs. Back Beach in Vung Tau is a great place to have a surf school. Coppola could have shot his surf scene at Vung Tau beach if he had wanted to shoot in Vietnam.
Now days, at Vung Tau Beach, there aren’t only surfers there. They also kite board, boogie board, stand up paddle board, and other water sports. All at Vung Tau Beach Club where they have rentals and professional instructors who offer lessons in all of these water activities. Famous American shaper, Jimmy Lewis, supplies Vung Tau Beach Club with the top of the line, state of the art kite boards, surfboards and stand up boards. At present, the Beach Club has over 30 kite boards, surfboards and stand up boards on hand for rent and for lessons.
They also have kites for the kite boards and boogie boards and other gear for rent. The staff of professional instructors at Vung Tau Beach Club speak Russian, English, Vietnamese and a little bit of French!!
They are open from 7am to 6pm daily and they are located at “Back Beach”, on Thuy Van street right right on the beach… just across the street from Sammy Hotel and New Wave Hotel.
See you there!!!
